VMunderground

2013—It’s On Like (Software Defined) Donkey Kong!

Posted on Updated on

As VMworld 2013 looms over the horizon with urgings to “Defy Convention”—the theme celebrating the tenth iteration of the event—an original crew of convention-defiers have instead “stayed the course” and are pleased to present the seventh convocation of the VMunderground.

As usual, a great (and growing!) lineup of sponsors is in the works; those will become public as we get into August, but it’s with thanks to them that we should be able to support the largest gathering in the history of the event.
The venue with which we’re in final negotiation (Terra Gallery) should be close enough to the main conference area for walking, yet far enough away to give attendees a different look at our host city than the view we’ll have in the following days of the conference.
We’re making the details intentionally vague for now; the point of this post is to confirm the rumors: VMunderground will happen, and it’ll be Sunday, August 25 from 8—11pm.
This timing should leave plenty of time for attendees to participate in other, earlier community and conference events that precede the Welcome Reception.
Keep an eye on this blog and the @vmunderground twitter feed for more official announcements, as well as the community interaction that will emerge with the #vmunderground hashtag.

2012-Shaking Things Up

Posted on Updated on

For the last few years, a small, unofficial crew has been organizing a rapidly growing event to meet up, have a few drinks, socialize, network, and generally get psyched up for vmworld the night before it all gets started. This started as a community effort and we remain true to our roots this year.

This will be year 6.  (Crazy right?!)

We’ve got AWESOME sponsors.

Get ready.

Be sure to check in here for more details! Alternatively, updates will also be posted on twitter as we did last year so be sure to follow the crew:

@bknudtson

@theronconrey

We’re looking forward to seeing you this year again at the Mother of All vBeers, stay tuned for more details!

When

Sunday August 26th, from 8 – 11PM

Given the interest in both #v0dgeball and #vmunderground, we’ve coordinated this year! We’ve had a lot of questions about vOdgeball this year.  If you have a ticket, please be on time and we’ll set up a separate line for those of you that want to come party but don’t have a ticket.  No guarantees there folks, and remember, sponsoring vendors do have tickets available as well.

We’ll more than likely stick around after the party shuts down, so get ready for a great night back in SFO!

Additional Registration details can be found here: Golden Ticket Update!

Ticket Sales

We’re decided that the best way to handle ticketing moving forward is to charge a small fee.  In doing so we’ll donate 100% of the ticket sale proceeds to a local charity in the hosting city for VMworld as a way of saying thanks for letting us all party in your town.

For VMworld 2012 100% of the proceeds of ticket sales will go to Save the Bay.

Thanks for your support of #VMunderground and we look forward to seeing you at the party!

2012 WuPaaS Golden Ticket Update

Posted on Updated on

Judging by the questions Brian, Theron and I are receiving on Twitter, email and in the men’s restroom, there is some keen interest on when tickets for the 2012 VMunderground WuPaaS (Warm-up Party as a Service) will be available.  So this blog post was necessary to communicate our intentions and to provide you instructions on how to get signed up AND how to be a responsible attendee of the party.

1. Physical Requirement

Make sure you can physically be in San Francisco on Sunday, August 26, at Jillian’s near the Moscone Center by 8 PM.  The party goes from 8 PM to 11 PM.

2. Ticket Required

If you satisfy condition #1, then know that you’ll need to have a ticket to gain entry to the WuPaaS event or be invited by one of our magnanimous sponsors.

3. Ticket Registration

Ticket registration will go live at Wednesday, August 1, 3:00 PM CDT (Chicago summer time) on EventBrite:  http://wupaas2012.eventbrite.com/ – Have your credit card in hand and ready.

4. Why is there a fee to a free party?

In the past we’ve had issues with people snapping up tickets for others and sometimes they didn’t end up showing up. Or they requested more tickets than they needed.  Our solution good, bad or ugly is to use the EventBrite features to take a small donation. In doing so we’ll donate 100% of the ticket sale proceeds to a local charity in the hosting city for VMworld as a way of saying thanks for letting us all party in your town.

This year, For VMworld US 2012 100% of the proceeds of ticket sales will go to Save the Bay.

5. Tickets will go fast!!!

Last year we sold out about 300 tickets in 5 minutes or so.  This year we have an even bigger venue so we’re targeting about 400 tickets for general giveaway, but even with the credit card addition on the sign-up form, we’re expecting these tickets to go quickly.

What if I don’t get a ticket, I’m on vacation or my dog died?

Please check in with our sponsors as they sometimes will offer a contest for a ticket.  Also, with a bigger venue and bigger pool of attendees, there will likely be a better chance to walk-up and gain entry once the deadline for ticketed entry has been reached. Last year we had quite a few walk-ups and I don’t think many (if any) were turned away.  If ticker holders aren’t there by 8:15 PM, whoever is in line gets in.  Since the venue is smack dab in the middle of VMworld City and near most of your hotels, you don’t have anything to lose by showing up for a chance to the party.  Worst case scenario you will meet some good folks in line and your can all go hit a local pub in the area if you can’t get in.
If you fly in late, don’t waste your time with a ticket.  Just show up and crash the party late.

That’s all you should need to know.  As always, keep an eye on #vmunderground Twitter feed for the latest updates on this year’s VMunderground.

Peace!

The Nitty Gritty

For the last few years, a small, unofficial crew has been organizing a rapidly growing event to meet up, have a few drinks, socialize, network, and generally get psyched up for vmworld the night before it all gets started. This started as a community effort and we remain true to our roots this year.

This will be the FIFTH year we’ve organized this event, the third year we’ve gotten FANTASTIC sponsors. This year boys and girls, we’re raising the bar (for part 5).

So get ready. Our sponsors are lined up, and our location has been booked.

Be sure to check in here for more details! Alternatively, updates will also be posted on twitter as we did last year so be sure to follow the crew:

When

Sunday August 28th.7-10PM

Be on time this year, the beer will be cold and the food will be hot.

We’ve had a lot of questions about vOdgeball this year.  Listen, we’re kicking off at 7 PM.  We want a full house and there’s a wait list.  If you have a ticket and aren’t there by 7:15ish we’re going to assume you’re a no show. Someone else is going to get your spot.  Sorry.

We’ll more than likely stick around after the doors open, if you can’t get in, we hope to see you then!

Head’s up.  Registration opens Wednesday, July 27th at 6PM CDT (Chicago time).  You can register at our Eventbrite page: http://wupaas2011.eventbrite.com.  Tickets will go fast so be there at 6PM.

I’ll also post info from my @vSeanClark twitter account with #vmunderground hashtag if anything changes.

If tickets run out.  You may just want to hang tight and refresh the page.  Some times a registration doesn’t finish on time and a ticket will open up.  If you don’t get in, you might consider hanging out in New York, New York area because we’ll likely have no-shows and you’ll be able to get in.  And if nothing else, at 10PM Nine Fine Irishmen opens up to the public and the band will take the stage.  It’s highly likely that we aren’t going anywhere and vmunderground will ride on into the wee hours.  😉

Good luck on getting a ticket.  My apologies if you don’t.  I’ll just have to see about talking Theron and Brian into a 1,000 seat venue next year.  😉  I’ll also make sure I stay late and raise a pint with you.

BPaaS (Beantown Party as a Service): TFD6 Edition

Posted on Updated on

VMunderground is happy to announce that we’ll be helping throw a virtualization community bash with the Tech Field Day 6 crew!!  If you are in the Boston area or local enough to Fenway, mark your calendars for Thursday night, June 9.  It will be the mother of all FCoTR user group meetings!!  Planning a dance fight for FCoTR supporters versus the FCoAC (Avian Carrier) supporters.  It will be spectacular!

Seriously, it’s on. It’s happening. And there will be a big giant green monster involved. Tech Field Day has the EMC Club at historic Fenway Park in Boston and TFD is opening up the event attendence to VMunderground! We have around 100 seats we’re looking to fill.  If you’re in the Boston area this night clear your calendar and sign up for a ticket and get ready to bring your “A” game to the VMunderground BPaaS (Beantown Party as a Service).

If you’ve had the fortune of attending a VMunderground WuPaaS (Warm-up Party as a Service) at the last two VMworlds, you know that VMunderground is a blast.  Some of the smartest virtualization minds in the world, best sponsors, and always some good food, brews and conversations. We’re currently rounding up some great sponsors to help support this community focused event. Stay tuned to learn more about this awesome opportunity to rub elbows with Boston’s finest vPeople and the Tech Field Day crew.

If you’re interested in sponsoring the first installment of BPaaS, please contact Theron Conrey and Sean Clark at beantown@vkaboom.com (parent company of VMunderground).  We have a few slots open for sponsorship, but speak up soon to reserve your spot.

ATTENDEES: Please note, this is NOT the VMworld party.  This is a first-time joint collaboration with Tech Field Day and you should probably live within Boston area before committing to this event.  VMunderground rocks, but not maybe not enough to fly into Boston for.  😉

Huge thanks to Stephen Foskett of Gestalt IT for letting VMunderground co-sponsor this amazing event, as well as letting us use his photos!

2010 – WuPaaS registration going live!

Posted on Updated on

Registration is Live!

Visit our registration page to sign up today.   The URL to the reg site is:  http://wupaas2010.eventbrite.com/.  The first half of the tickets are going live at 10 AM Central time (11 AM Eastern time). Last batch of tickets will go live at 12:30 PM Eastern Time (New York) on Monday, August 16. Also, fair warning about the tickets will be given on Twitter through @vSeanClark and the hastag #WuPaaS.

Info on the tickets and admittance to party will be found on the event brite site for now.  For the now, here is the thought behind this madness:

  • Last year’s party filled up fast, so we need to to set good expectations for people making party plans.  Tickets seem like good way to do that.
  • There are a handful of people that need to be here: sponsors, Theron, Sean, and VIP guests like Foreigner.  (fingers crossed)  Some tickets are reserved for this.
  • Also want to allow for people to walk up the day of the party and squeeze in.
  • Releasing tickets in batches so can we give party goers a chance to get their computer over the weekend to sign up.

VMworld 2009 Sunday Night Extravaganza

Posted on Updated on

When:

Sunday, August 30th 2009. 7-10PM

What:

It’s a party.  Now, don’t expect endless free booze and an eight course meal. There will be some food.  There may even be some drinks, but you’ll want to bring some money for beverages or a serious meal.  Try to win some prizes. Have a good time.  We’re looking forward to hanging out and getting a great start to what will be, we’re sure, a great week.

Technology talk and networking with your peers is strongly encouraged, however if you’re talking about a product you sell, you’re buying drinks (sponsoring vendors excluded of course), We will hear no excuses (seriously, we’ve worked out a deal for you to work it off in the kitchen). Vendor engineers are excluded from this rule again this year as they tend to be extremely funny after a few pints, and can’t help themselves.

Who:

You and about 150 of your fellow attendees.  Along with some vendor types raffling off some goodies.  It’s going to be a full on shindig.  If you want to be involved in the raffle however, you’re going to need to RSVP here.  Also, obviously, you need to be present to win.  I’m sure you can remember how annoying it is, standing there, hearing someone elses name win the prize you really want. Only they’re not there.  Annoying.  If you win something and you’re not there, we’ll find a way to embarass you.  Seriously.  So please, only RSVP if you’re planning on showing up.

Where:

We’ll be starting the evening @ the Thirsty Bear, we’ll be the geeks looking out of place.  Or if for some odd reason the entire bar is full of geek types, just ask for the “VMworld 2009 Sunday Night Warm Up Extravaganza”.  It’s a mouthful, but it’ll be worth it.

RSVP

As we’re flying by the seat of our pants here, if you’re planning on dropping by, we’d like to know!

Let us know you’ll be there and get your name in the raffle!

Please add your Contact information in the thread here and write how cool the sunday night warm up is going to be. And because we think dropbox (shameless link) is so awesome, if you submit your “statement of cool” in limerick form, you’ll get two entries in the raffle instead of one.

To much cool for one thread?  We think not.

Best limerick gets the “answered successfully” on the forum and wins a book TBA.  Names will be submitted for the raffle from the RSVP list on VMworld.com, so don’t forget to let us know you’re coming!

Here’s another link for the thread for those of you who missed the glaring hyperlink above:

http://vmworld.com/thread/2995

Let the world (at least the twitter world) know too

Yes – I’ll be there!

Nope – Not this year fellas…
